Organized by Karen Ferris and Kate Midnight, stay-home moms and founders of Big Green Head (www.BigGreenHead.com), a website devoted to the promotion of green living, the festival encourages visitors to unearth their green side.
Ferris states, “We were overwhelmed with the positive response we received to last year’s event from all participants: vendors, community organizations, and visitors. In 2010 we actually had to turn away interested participants because demand for booth space exceeded our expectations. This year we’re adding two more corners of the Village Green, more food vendors, and live music. In addition to the activity on the Village Green, we’ve organized a free electronic recycling drop-off in front of Thomas Worthington High School that will benefit their Stadium Turf Project.”
The idea for the Green on the Green festival resulted from conversations with Worthington Schools and other community organizations about what they could do to spread the word about the local green movement and promote greater awareness of environmental issues.
Midnight says, “As parents, we really wanted to make the event fun for the whole family. Given our growing list of participants, I think everyone will find something that interests them and will hopefully leave with some good ideas as well. We’re really excited about the bike corral being built by the athletic department at Thomas Worthington High School. It will allow more visitors to bike to the event and securely park their bikes while they enjoy the day.”
The spaces available at the festival are filling up quickly and include businesses providing environmentally-friendly goods and services such as rain barrels, organic lawn care, square foot gardening, worm composting, organic and fair-trade products, including clothing, jewelry, animal treats, health and beauty products, and much more.
Organizations participating in the festival include The Ohio Wildlife Center, Franklin Soil and Water Conservation District, Columbus ArtMobile, Local Matters, Sustainable Worthington, Healthy Worthington, Worthington Libraries, and Worthington Schools.
Promotional assistance for the Green on the Green festival is provided by Worthington Schools, The City of Worthington, and Worthington Libraries. For more information, call Karen at 614-560-4777 or visit www.BigGreenHead.com/green-on-the-green for the complete list of participants.
