RECYCLING DRIVE DIVERTS 63,000 POUNDS OF ELECTRONICS FROM LANDFILL

Worthington, Ohio (June 9th) -- On Saturday, May 21, the community came out in droves for a free electronic recycling drop-off in front of Thomas Worthington High School (TWHS). The e-waste drive was part of the second annual Green on the Green festival, and benefited the high school’s Stadium Turf Project.

Festival organizers Karen Ferris and Kate Midnight, stay-home moms and founders of Big Green Head (www.BigGreenHead.com), teamed up with Jeff Kamer of Environmental Reclaim, TWHS Athletic Director Dan Girard, and the City of Worthington, to allow residents an opportunity to safely and responsibly discard their old, obsolete electronics.

Kamer states, “We were overwhelmed by the positive response we received. We couldn’t have anticipated the amount of electronics people had. It was a real community effort.” A constant stream of cars filled with old computers, televisions, appliances, electrical cords and more, pulled up to unload.

Girard organized high school athletes to unload cars and fill 3 semis full of electronics. Several companies scheduled corporate pick-ups that added to the 63,000 pounds that were collected. Environmental Reclaim donated $2,000 to the Thomas Worthington High School Turf Project, aiding in their efforts to raise money to replace the grass stadium with artificial turf.

The idea to have an e-waste drive resulted from Big Green Head's desire to grow the Green on the Green festival and provide more ways for people to be “green”.

Ferris says, “We were excited to involve the high school and allow the kids to be a part of it. Raising money through a green effort is the best of both worlds for Kate and me. As former PTA presidents and creators of Big Green Head, it combines two things that we care about. We look forward to doing more of the same in other communities.”
