Making the Switch from Paper to Permanent... Coffee Filters That Is -- Week 6

Written by Karen

Welcome to week 6 of my 52 Ways to go Green...

The last time I purchased disposable, paper, coffee filters, I made a vow that it would, well... be my last time.

I put "permanent coffee filter" on my shopping list and started the search at my usual shopping haunts in the coffee and small appliance aisles.  Having no luck and now no paper filters left, I actually resorted to reusing the old paper filter in my machine (only for two mornings) and stepped up the urgency of my search (I was serious about not buying anymore).

I finally found a Gold Tone Filter made just for my Cuisinart coffee maker at Bed, Bath and Beyond for $9.99 (minus 20% coupon).  I hear you can even buy reusable filters for those Keurig single cup brewers too. Those are even a bigger waste producer.

So what’s the big deal about making the switch from paper coffee filters to a permanent one?  Besides the fact that it takes a tree to brew a mug (not a whole tree, each time, mind you)

  • It eliminates a one-use item from your daily routine.
  • It saves you money.
  • Less waste – filter production and packaging.
  • They are made from renewable and sustainable resources which are better for our environment.
  • They contain no artificial fibers or bleaches.
  • Best of all, it will not affect the taste of your coffee.

Check out Big Green Head’s Green Routine, Rethink Your Drink, for more ways to green up your morning cup.

I've recently made the same switch. The only thing I have had to do differently is make about 1/4 cup more coffee than I will drink as some of the very fine grounds tend to pass through the filter and leave a "sludge" at the bottom of the pot. If I make a bit extra, that mud doesn't wind up in the bottom of my cup.

Bonus** The grounds are easier to collect from the reusable filter for snail deterrent in my garden. ;)
