With summer here and a road trip looming, I put on my list of 52 ways to go green "buy the kids their own water bottles". I found wonderful, 24 oz, stainless steel, food grade bottles on sale, for $2.99 each (Bed Bath and Beyond) and labeled each one with a child’s name. Now, there is absolutely no excuse for anyone to complain of thirst while we go about our summer fun. And more importantly, no need to purchase a plastic bottle of water. Take a look at the advantages of using reusable over the one-time plastic variety.
Safety
1. Water bottles that are designed to be reusable do not have the health issues attached to them that disposable bottles do. When a disposable bottle is reused, it can leak carcinogens. This problem does not exist in bottles made to be reused.
Savings
2. If everyone in the United States switched to using reusable bottles, it's been estimated that consumers would save $7 billion dollars a year.
Cleaning
3. Reusable water bottles are easy to clean, and can be rinsed out after each use or soaked in hot, soapy water. They can also be thoroughly cleaned by simply using baking soda.
Materials
4. Reusable bottles come in a number of different materials, including plastic, stainless steel and aluminum.
Storage
5. To keep bacteria from building up inside the bottle, store it in the freezer.
