do green | feel good

We Are Big Green Head!

This monster is on a mission to change your perception about going green. It’s not difficult, nor is it costly... in fact we think it's pretty cool. Start doing green and feeling good. Have you got something better to do?

Greening up My Morning Cup of Coffee -- Week 12

Written by Karen

I’d like to start by giving myself credit for practicing what I preach (Big Green Head anyway).  As soon as I wrote the BGH Green Routine, Green up your Morning Cup, I immediately switched to organic coffee.

Although the brand I buy at Costco does not carry the Fair Trade seal, it does claim this:

“Grown without the use of chemicals, pesticides and fertilizers, Ground Organic Blend promotes healthier soil, forests and wildlife through renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water”

And the other thing I love about this particular brand?  The price - only $10 for 2 pounds of delicious coffee!  So if price is your excuse, I’m here to tell you differently.  Last week I was in a coffee bind (so to speak) and resorted to buying a 12 oz bag of Duncan Donut coffee from CVS.. $9!  It wasn’t even a full pound... it almost killed me – (just not as much as my caffeine headache would have... so I bought it anyway).  Trader Joe's is another place you can find well-priced organic and Fair Trade coffees.

I don’t mean to sound like a spokes person for Costco, but they seem to have a lot of organic choices and environmentally friendly packaging.  This is why I buy my half and half there as well.  An entire ½ gallon costs $2.99 and it’s organic to boot!  I can hear some of you already “what will I do with an entire half gallon?”  Well first of all, the expire by date is about 6 weeks away and depending on how much coffee drinking you do, you can put quite a dent in it.  At this price, I don’t feel bad adding it to my cooking to cream up homemade Mac n cheese (not for me, for the kidsSmile), quiche, eggs, vodka sauce... get creative.

As for my mug, everyone has a favorite.  Sorry Michigan fans, mine just happens to be an OSU Buckeye mug.  Coffee just wouldn’t taste the same without it!
