Cleaning out Closets – Deciphering What to Sell, Donate & Reuse -- Week 21

Written by Karen
Before I even knew it was considered environmentally friendly, or green, I’ve been selling or donating my unused clothing and household items.  My motivation wasn’t about landfill space, but rather; helping others, not being wasteful and sometimes a need (or want) for cash.
With the weather changing, and some inspiration from a fellow blogger, New Mummy’s Tips, I decided this is the perfect week to sort through closets and drawers and get ready for winter.  Let’s get started:

Go through closets and drawers

  • Pull things that don’t fit, are too tattered to wear, or you’re just plain sick of.
  • Find a nice big space (for me that’s my living room) and start sorting into piles

Here is what your piles will look like

  • Resell – consignment and resale shops are only interested in items that are in good condition and follow the current style trends.  Be very particular about what you bring to the resale shops or you’ll find yourself feeling rejected – they love coats, designer labels and items with sports logos (like OSU sweatshirts etc.)
  • Save and reuse
    • Old t-shirts and socks make for great dust clothes and cleaning rags.
    • Old towels are great for wiping your pet’s muddy feet
    • Outdated clothing may make for a great costume accessory
  • Donate – everything else falls into this category, even if it’s stained, torn or plain old ugly.  And here’s why....

99% of used textiles are recyclable!

Non-profits like Goodwill and the Salvation Army play a crucial role in keeping old clothes out of the waste stream.

When they get donations of clothes that are too threadbare to re-sell in one of their shops, they send them to “rag sorters” that specialize in recycling pieces of fabric, large and small.

Great news for those who wear clothes until they’re full of holes or out of style!

Have fun and get creative

Remember, not only is it green (and cool) to resell, donate and recycle, but it’s  also super fun to browse through garage sales, thrift stores and donations centers and keep the cycle of reuse going!
