do green | feel good

We Are Big Green Head!

This monster is on a mission to change your perception about going green. It’s not difficult, nor is it costly... in fact we think it's pretty cool. Start doing green and feeling good. Have you got something better to do?

Week 48 -- Still Going Green and Getting Lean

Written by Karen

I’m going to proceed as if nothing happened. As if I didn't take a few... errr... 10 weeks off from this blog. It's not that I'm not dedicated to my goal of going green and getting lean with an effort that could potentially kill me. In fact, with the exception of the occasional, bleary, post-party morning (don't get too excited; in the suburbs it's usually too much wine and cheese), I wake up most days with a green, lean focus.

So What’s Shakin?

Besides the under part of my aging arms which I’m convinced will allow me to take flight by age 65, a lot!

Getting Lean

I never thought it would happen, but I found an activity that I like to do regularly and I’m starting to transform my physique. I row on a crew team. I know, right? Huh? Yes... as in a boat. Well it’s actually me and 8 other people. We are respectfully referred to as “Masters” with an average age of 52 years old. I have fallen in love with being on the water, training with a team, and competing. In the off-season we train indoors making it a year-round sport. I do it because I love it, not because I want to lose weight (repeat mantra daily). It only took 44 years!

Going Green

Although I’m not even close to claiming “treehugger” status, I continually remain conscious about my choices and the “RE’s” – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Re-open (that wine from last night please).

I’m not perfect, but who is? I’ll admit to my struggle with consistently buying eggs that come in cardboard containers (recyclable) rather than Styrofoam containers (as toxic as Joan River’s face and going to outlive us all). Of course raising chickens and collecting fresh eggs is an option. Ha, ha, ha!!... no really. I’m going to take the steps to buy and recycle the cardboard egg containers... promise!

I’d say my greenest efforts lie in my work with Big Green Head (BGH). As I struggle to increase my personal eco-status, BGH allows me (and Kate) to engage our local community and online audience with information, education and opportunities to do green (hey, that sounds a lot like his mission statement).   I look forward to keeping you updated on our developing programs and opportunities through a monthly newsletter. You can sign up for it on the main page of BigGreenHead.com.   It’s where you can learn more about our E-waste Drop-off program, Volunteer Opportunities and our Third Annual Green on the Green Event, just to name a few.

It feels good to start a new year and to be back writing for BGH. Let’s fill our recycled glasses with organic, local, spirits and toast to going green!

i love that you're not perfect and can admit it. i am the same way. i am "head" of the green team at work and there are days, weeks even, sometimes that i am totally off the green radar! but i always find my way back because i know its the right thing to do. i am happy you found a cool sport/activity to help you get into shape! good luck in competitions!
