Recycling! In my opinion, recycling represents the bare bone basics of what you can do for the planet and the stepping stone that leads to other green deeds.
Why Recycle?
It’s good for the environment
-
Recycling conserves natural resources, such as timber, water, and minerals.
-
Recycling prevents habitat destruction, loss of biodiversity, and soil erosion associated with logging and mining.
-
Manufacturing with recycled materials, with very few exceptions, saves energy and water and produces less air and water pollution than manufacturing with virgin materials.
It’s good for the economy
-
The more people recycle, the cheaper it gets.
-
Recycling creates four jobs for every one job created in the waste management and disposal industries.
-
Well-run recycling programs cost less to operate than waste collection, land-filling, and incineration.
Perhaps you’re not recycling at your home, office or school... why not? For many it’s a matter of cost and/or convenience. Not every community, office or school district has programs in place. But it’s up to us as individuals to take the initiative and get the recycle ball rolling!
No curbside recycling?
Big Green Head recently ran across an interesting website which gives people, with no curbside recycling, an alternative to the landfill.
Meet my friends at ecycler.com, a website connecting people discarding recyclables (cans, bottles, newspapers, etc.) with those wishing to collect them.
Recycle for FREE or Collect recycling for income.
Ecycler provides an alternative to the many U.S. households, institutions or businesses that are not offered curb-side recycling. It's also an option for people who have to pay for curb-side recycling or who want to have their recyclables picked up when and where they desire.
Discarders can do their part for the environment while at the same time helping collectors in need of additional income. The discarders’ recyclables are “collected” by these individuals or groups and redeemed for cash at a local recycling center. Ecycler supports this community building for groups such as the Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts, Church groups, social clubs, etc. by making available the same marketing materials used by individual collectors on ecycler.com. Find out how you can get involved.
Big Green Head encourages everyone to incorporate green into their lifestyle, so let’s start with the basics; recycling at home, in the office, at school and events- taking small steps to create a big impact. It’s all part of this monster’s mission to change your perception about going green. It’s not difficult, nor is it costly...in fact we think it's pretty cool!
