do green | feel good

We Are Big Green Head!

This monster is on a mission to change your perception about going green. It’s not difficult, nor is it costly... in fact we think it's pretty cool. Start doing green and feeling good. Have you got something better to do?

Tote Your Own Bag

There are so many plastic bags, literally floating around, that animals mistake them for food which causes them to die. Besides the fact that they are ugly, it takes them centuries to break down and when they do, they break into small plastic pieces that contaminate our soil and water. Basically, plastic bags never really go away. Big Green Head would like to see them all go away!

BGH Difficulty Rating: one starone starone star

  1. Put your reusable bags at the top of your grocery list so you remember to bring them into the store.
  2. Store your bags in your car.
  3. Buy a small portable bag that fits in your purse.
  4. Reusable totes aren’t just for the grocery store; bring your bags into any store that puts merchandise into plastic or paper bags.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Plastic bags have been found in the stomachs of endangered animals including the leatherback turtles, harbor porpoises and black footed albatross. Ingestion of plastic bags can result in blockages, internal infections, starvation and death.
  • It takes about 430,000 gallons of oil to produce 100 million non-degradable plastic bags and we use 4 -5 trillion plastic bags worldwide annually.
  • Plastic bags take up to 1,000 years to degrade and contaminating our soil and water.

Expense: The cost of a reusable bag runs from $0.99 and up.

Reduce/Reuse/Recycle - REDUCE the amount of plastic bags you use and always RECYCLE them.  If you reuse them, they will eventually end up in the landfill but in some instances it’s better than buying a plastic bag for your waste basket or dog poop.

One of the great ways to remember to take the bags with you is to put the kids in charge of remembering them. It gives them a feeling of responsibility, and helps you get the bags into the store and use them.

The City of Toronto has been charging 5 cents a bag for plastic bags for the past year or so. It's really helped reduce plastic bags (at least from what I can tell.)
I sometimes forget to bring a reusable bag, but I've started keeping them near the front. That's helped.

I knew the plastic bags were evil, but I had no idea animals were EATING them. Now, if I paid more attention to my insane cat, that would not have come as a surprise. Her constant licking of plastic bags at 2am is enough of a reason for me to stop using them!

Many stores are now selling inexpensive, reusable bags. We simply keep several in the trunk to use when we are shopping. Works great!
