Gulf Oil Spill Needs Your Hair and Fur! - full

Gulf Oil Spill Needs Your Hair and Fur!

Gather up all the hair and fur that you can find and donate it to help soak up the oil spill in the Gulf.  Brush your pets, clean your brushes, contact your salons, pet groomers and school organizers.

Human Hair and Pet Fur Needed to Absorb Oil Spill in Gulf

The unfortunate BP oil spill in the Gulf has everyone wondering what will happen to the hundreds of species of fish, birds and other wildlife that live along the Gulf Coast, and the families who make their living fishing shrimp, oysters and other marine life.

Big Green Head is taking this unfortunate event and turning it into an opportunity to educate.  It isn’t just the mass spills from oil rigs to blame; you may be surprised to learn about the large amount of oil that enters our oceans each year.

Did you know, every year, an estimated 706 million gallons of oil enter our planet's oceans?  Here’s the breakdown:

  • Used Motor Oil - 363 million gallons - One typical 5 quart oil change improperly dumped can contaminate millions of gallons of freshwater.
  • Routine ship maintenance and washing containers - 137 million
  • Air pollution - 92 million gallons
  • Natural seepage of oil bubbling up from the sea bottom - 62 million gallons
  • Large Spill Accidents - 37 million gallons
  • Offshore drilling - 15 million gallons

It’s time to take action!  No matter where you live or how much money you earn, there is a simple way that each of us can help, thanks to an organization called Matter of Trust, a non-profit that collects hair and fur used to soak up oil spilled in our oceans.  Sounds crazy I know!

Hair is a natural absorbent of oil from both the air and water.  In fact, one pound of hair can absorb one quart of motor oil.  Donated hair and fur is made into hair mats (about the size of a door mat) or hair boons (hair filled panty hose).  These mats and boons float on the ocean surface and naturally absorb the oil leaving behind clean water.  Oil filled hair mats are then introduced to oyster mushrooms, where they grow and absorb the oil. It takes approximately 12 weeks for the mushrooms to absorb all of the oil, converting the oily hair mats into nontoxic compost.

Now that’s using your head...err...your hair!
