We Are Big Green Head!

This monster is on a mission to change your perception about going green. It’s not difficult, nor is it costly...in fact we think it's pretty cool. Join BGH today and start doing green and feeling good. Have you got something better to do?

Green Routines - Easy ways to Go Green

Rethink Your Mindset Change can be a challenge for people.  Sometimes it takes everyone else doing it before we give it a try ourselves.  Don’t be embarrassed to be openly green – the more we all do it, the more commonplace it will become.
Consume Less Meat Big Green Head is not much of a meat eater himself (he’ll take green jelly beans over cheese burgers any day), but realizes most people include meat in their daily diet as both a source of protein and pleasure. You don’t have to become a vegetarian to make an impact on the environment.
Waste-Free Lunch It pays to pack from a nutritional standpoint, but does your lunch contain paper, plastic and drink boxes that get tossed in the trash? There are some neat reusable lunch containers out there... you should check them out.
Buy CFLs CFL stands for Compact Florescent Light, or for some they're referred to as the Curly Light. You may not be ready to invest in changing all your bulbs at once, but for your most-used lights, use CFLs. Although they cost more initially, they provide an equivalent amount of bright, attractive light, are better for the environment and will save you money in the long run.
Rethink Your Cleaning It’s time we change our cleaning routines and stop relying on toxic chemicals.  The alternatives mentioned below are not only healthier for our families and environment, but our wallets too.
Tote Your Own Bag There are so many plastic bags, literally floating around, that animals mistake them for food which causes them to die. Besides the fact that they are ugly, it takes them centuries to break down and when they do, they break into small plastic pieces that contaminate our soil and water. Basically, plastic bags never really go away. Big Green Head would like to see them all go away!

A good tailgate is all about eating, drinking, and cheering on your team. Not many people think about garbage, pollution, and landfills at their tailgate, but perhaps they should. Any time fans assemble for an organized sports event, what’s left behind are overflowing trash cans. But the worst offenders are college football games. For example, after Georgia hosted South Carolina last year, custodial staff collected more than 70 tons of trash—broken tents, abandoned grills, and scores of empty bottles.

How far are you willing to go to green up your tailgate? Being greener doesn’t have to mean going without, sometimes it just means choosing differently and taking home what you brought, some of it in the form of garbage or recycling. Since Big Green Head is all about easy, practical, ways to live greener, we will walk you through the most basic steps of throwing a greener tailgate. Not only will your guests not be inconvenienced, but they may even be grateful!

1. Water – Instead of expensive bottled water, provide a cooler of water and biodegradable or compostable cups.

2. Recycling – Set out recycle containers and mark them clearly. Pop up garbage and recycle bins are great for this. Line them with a clear, biodegradable bag.

3. Dinnerware – Disposable dinnerware is what most people will opt for, so make sure it’s biodegradable, compostable or at the very least made from recycled materials.

  • Gauging Water Usage Written by Holly Kissel

About halfway through his 7th grade school-year, my son figured out that if he took a shower in the morning before school, he 1) was more awake at school, 2) smelled and looked better, and 3) got to school on time.  All of these outcomes were great.  What wasn't great was our water bill.  Now,  I didn't want to squash his new love of cleanliness and timeliness, so, what to do?
